Spice King’s Restaurant at 1559 Kingston Rd. is under new management and has transformed into a more accessible neighbourhood restaurant with prices suitable for family meals, business lunches, and casual get-togethers with friends.
The space has been rented to Sivaruban Paransothy, who trained as a chef after he immigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2002.
Paransothy works with front of house manager Noel Snook, who said they’ve changed the menu and deliberately lowered the prices to attract more neighbourhood customers
“We’re actually getting a lot of the locals coming in that realize we’ve changed and say, ‘Spice was great but we never really went there because it was so expensive…It was only for special occasions.’ But now the food is also just as good. Now they can come more often for more variety and the lower prices,” Snook said.
Menu varies according to the day of the week
Spice King’s now offers a wide variety of tasty dishes and everything is cooked to order with fresh ingredients.
The menus are themed according to the day of the week so customers can choose when to drop by. Monday is wings night (barbecued as opposed to deep-fried), steak on Tuesdays, made-to-order burgers on Wednesdays, curry night on Thursdays, pasta on Fridays and brunch on the weekends.
Paransothy says his favourite dish on the menu is butter chicken on Thursdays. He’s kept paella on offer because that was the best-selling dish when the restaurant was known as Spice Mediterranean Fusion. But it’s a smaller portion and more affordable.
The prices overall are quite reasonable. For example, the highest priced item on the children’s menu is $4.50.
“This is everything under my control,” Paransothy, said. “I know the food costs, I can manage the price and serve nice food for the customers. That is my goal. My goal is fresh food and [keeping] the customers happy.”
This is the first business that Paransothy has owned and he has high hopes. He’s worked as a sous chef and kitchen manager and spends the early part of each day helping to prepare 35,000 meals for the Toronto District School Board.
Paransothy said he’s very excited about his news business. “Customers are my first priority and I want to make them happy,” he said.
Spice King’s is open from 4:30pm on weekdays. Brunch is served from 10am – 5:00pm on weekends. After 5pm it reverts to a regular menu with a 10% discount on all food but not alcohol.
