If you don’t do it for the hundreds of families in Birch Cliff and beyond whose homes flooded with sewage and stormwater this summer — do it to protect yourself in the future.
I’m talking about signing the petition urging Toronto City Council to declare Ward 36 a priority flooding area.
Here’s the background
Last week, at the urging of City Councillor Gary Crawford, the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee designated Ward 36 a flooding priority, based on an environmental assessment completed in 2011.
The EA identified six infrastructure improvements costed at $9.4 million.
If the motion passes full City Council next Monday, October 1st, Ward 36 would join the queue for a $743 million infrastructure improvement program that was put in place several years ago.
The committee vote was close — just 3 – 2 — and a petition has been started to help convince City Council that Ward 36 needs help.
Print the petition
We’re looking for people in Birch Cliff to print the petition that can be found here and go to a few neighbours to get signatures.
It doesn’t need to huge time commitment — just do your own block.
If you email us via the “Contact Us” page, Birch Cliff News will pick up the petitions and deliver to Councillor Crawford’s office.
Here are the streets already covered
The folks on Kalmar, which flooded heavily, have been hard at work getting signatures and have covered the following:
- the middle section of Kalmar between Hollis and Freeman
- Crescentwood
- Manderly
- Dunnington
The residents of Chine North have also been hard at work and you can read more about their efforts if you join the Facebook group Flood July 15 2012.
