Here’s a fabulous photo depicting the transition from radial cars to buses in Scarborough.
It’s 1936 and workers are removing the radial car tracks while a bus passes by in the foreground.
Electric radial cars started running through Birch Cliff around 1901 and were replaced by streetcars in 1928.
I suspect this photo was taken east of the Birchmount Loop where the radial cars continued to run to Eglinton until they were replaced by buses.
The passenger stops along the old radial line used to be numbered. “Stop 14” was the “Halfway House” at Mindland where No Frills is today. “Stop 17” was Scarborough High School, which we know today as R.H. King Academy. For a long time, these “stops” were common reference points and even used for delivering mail.
This photo came from the facebook page of Scarborough, Looking Back, which has some wonderful archival photos.
