The City of Toronto is building a new double gym at the Birchmount Community Centre that will offer community sports programming for residents of southwest Scarborough, including Birch Cliff.
Plans for the gym will be unveiled at a public meeting on Wednesday Oct. 21 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm at the Variety Village cafeteria.
City staff and the gym’s architect will be on hand to review preliminary design concepts with the community, receive public input and answer questions.
It’s not clear yet exactly where the double gym will be located because space is now relatively tight at the corner of Birchmount Rd. and Kingston Rd.
Birchmount Park is a multi-purpose recreational area that currently includes a swimming pool, indoor arena, outdoor track and sports field, as well as baseball diamonds. Some of the facilities are shared with Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute and the arena is home to the Scarborough Wexford Raiders Jr. “A” Hockey Club.
Ward 36 Councillor Gary Crawford says plans for the gym were put on the city’s capital project list several years ago, before he was first elected in 2010, but there were no dollars connected to the project until last year’s budget cycle.
Crawford says the planning stage is nearing completion and construction may begin as early as next spring.
