Cliffside Drive and East Haven Road

A terrible accident in Cliffside has taken the life of a five-year old girl.

The little girl was struck by a garbage truck on Cliffside Drive, just south of Kingston Road at 3:46pm this afternoon.

She died at the scene of the accident.

Crossing Cliffside Road

The unidentified girl was in a group of four children crossing Cliffside from east to west just south of East Haven Road, according to Toronto Police spokesman PC Clint Stibbe.

The garbage truck was travelling westbound on East Haven and hit three of the four children while turning left to go south.

Two other children injured

A six-year old boy and a 13-year old girl were sent to hospital with minor injuries.  The fourth child was unharmed.

Constable Stibbe said the driver of the garbage truck is a 62-year old man.

There are unconfirmed reports that he was taken to hospital, suffering from shock.

Police say it’s too soon to say whether speed was a factor in the accident.

In a statement, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” and passed along his sympathy.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the victims during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers, and I’m sure those of every parent in Toronto, are with the children, their families and friends.

Ward 36 Councillor Gary Crawford went to the scene to offer his support to members of the community and released a statement expressing his “deepest sympathies”.
