Courcelette P.S. remembers

Students at Courcelette Public School renewed their special bond with Canada’s veterans at a Remembrance Day ceremony attended by a veteran who went to the school 90 years ago.

97-year old Alex Napier was a guest of honour at the ceremony on Friday, along with veteran Joseph Woods whose granddaughter is a current student at Courcelette.

Dressed primarily in red and white, the children sang and read poems honouring Canada’s veterans from World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Afghanistan.

World War II veteran Alex Napier was a guest of honour at the Remembrance Day ceremony. One of many former  Courcelette students who fought for Canada, he was also one of 15 veterans who returned to the school for many years as a volunteer reading tutor.

The other honoured guest was veteran Joseph Woods, whose granddaughter is a current student at Courcelette.

The original school was built in 1911 and was renamed Courcelette after the famous World War I battle of the same name that took place in September 1916 during the Somme Offensive.  The foyer of the school features a display commemorating the service of its former students.

The students presented a beautiful tribute to Canada’s veterans hosted by Lukas Holland and Meredith Johnson.

The multimedia presentation included a tribute to former students and veterans who have passed.  In 2004, the Courcelette playground was dedicated to Laurie Rhydwen,  Alex Napier, Bill Hussey and Harry Stone.  Only Mr. Napier is still with us today.

The children observe a minute of silence.
