Scarborough Community Council has adopted a motion asking for a feasibility study into the installation of sidewalks in the area surrounding Cliffside Public School.
The motion was put forward by Ward 36 Councillor Gary Crawford and has the backing of local residents who started a petition following the death of five-year old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger on March 7th.
Kayleigh was struck and killed by a garbage truck while crossing Cliffside Drive at East Haven.
“There are many streets in this community that do not presently have sidewalks,” said Crawford in his letter to Scarborough Council. “This accident highlights the need for sidewalks to ensure the safety of pedestrians and children that walk to and from Cliffside Public School.”
The motion requests the City of Toronto’s Director of Transportation (Public Realm) to conduct an analysis and provide recommendations.
Crawford is promising a public meeting on the issue in May.
