A 23-year-old man will appear at Scarborough Court Wednesday on second degree murder charges after an early morning fight in a run down Kingston Road basement apartment left a 58-year-old man dead from multiple stab wounds.
At this stage police aren’t saying too much except that several people were drinking in the apartment at 1678 Kingston Road, wedged between the Royal Young Market and the State Farm insurance agency.
Accused named by police
Police said they got the 911 call around 3:26 a.m. and that they arrived to find the victim stabbed several times and dying.
He was pronounced at the scene.
The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The accused is a Kalib Dufty, 23, of Toronto but there’s no indication of his relationship to the victim. Nor is it clear who lives in the apartment, the accused or the victim or both.
Tuesday police yellow tape secured the crime scene and white-suited forensic officers went about their business of recording and documenting the scene under the direction of the homicide squad.
Few details on apartment inhabitants
The Royal Young Market remained closed until 1:30 p.m. but the clerk at the counter shrugged when asked if he knew the victim or the occupants of the apartment next door.
“They come and buy some things, snacks, drinks,” he said, adding he’d had no trouble and didn’t know anything about reports of people coming and going from the apartment. “I think he has friends who visit.”
Two local bartenders also shrugged off knowledge, saying while patrons had been talking about the incident because it was on the news and the police presence in the neighbourhood had created some interest, they didn’t know the victim directly and couldn’t add much without a name or picture.

this dreadful crime unfortunately should not come as a surprise. This loction has been a ‘crime scene’ for years.
Thank you for the info on the location. Can you tell us why the location has been a crime scene for years.
Many people who live across the street have anecdotes about unusual traffic into that location at all times of day and night. But that’s all I know.
Its been a crackhouse, shooting gallery, etc, etc for years. Individuals
would cross the street directly across from this location to the four detached houses to buy and sell drugs, etc. Just ask the police for details.
I think it would be a smart idea to go knock on the door of this
basement apartment and ask the person renting it just what really goes on there. At worst he or she will tell you to go away or maybe invite you in and tell you what goes on.This would answer many question for many people. I live in the area and have heard so many
stories. I do know what goes on.But I think someone that has some kind of standing in this neighborhood would be best.
It’s an intriguing idea Tony. I’m going to guess that whatever was going on there is not going on any more now that the police are involved. I will make an effort though to follow up as the accused goes through the court process.
