Photography enthusiasts take note – the first annual Bluffer’s Park Photography Competition is launching on Sunday, May 5th at 2pm at the Dogfish Restaurant.
The competition has been organized by residents of Bluffer’s Park Marina as a way to celebrate the Scarborough Bluffs and encourage people to enjoy the beauty that is in our backyard.
Organizer Colleen Greer has lived in a float home at the marina for 13 years and says she and her neighbours are holding the competition because they want to give back to the community.
“We really want people to be aware of Bluffer’s Park and Bluffer’s Park Marina. We love it. It’s a gem. A little piece of paradise. We felt it would be good to raise awareness of what’s here in Scarborough.”
Shared love of nature
Greer says everyone who lives at the marina shares a common bond in that they love and appreciate nature and wildlife.
For example, Greer says the entire community takes care of the swans at Bluffer’s Park
“Every time the family goes by, everybody counts the signets to make sure there are none missing. At least once or twice a year swans will get caught up in the fisherman’s lines and so our people will contact the Toronto Wildlife Centre and indicate we have a swan in distress. We just look after them and make sure they’re OK and they’re not fed junk.”
The marina residents will be raising money at Sunday’s launch for the Toronto Wildlife Centre by setting out donation jars and plan to carry on with the fundraising throughout the summer.
